Monaco reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality during the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, held from Monday, March 10 to Friday, March 21 in New York. The session marked the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark framework for advancing women’s rights.

In the general discussion, Alyson Calem-Sangiorgio, Second Secretary at Monaco’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, outlined the Principality’s progress. She highlighted updates to outdated laws, the establishment of a Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Women’s Rights, and initiatives to boost women’s access to education and healthcare. She also detailed training programs for supporting victims of violence.

The session concluded with a political declaration, adopted by consensus, renewing global commitment to the Beijing framework amid persistent challenges three decades after its inception. At Monaco’s urging, the declaration included sports—already noted in the Beijing text as a tool for empowering women and girls—as a key element, reflecting the Principality’s push to integrate athletic opportunities into gender equality efforts.
