The FIA World Motor Sport Council has approved a significant rule change for the Monaco Grand Prix, mandating a minimum of two pit stops in an effort to invigorate racing at the iconic event.

The decision comes in response to concerns over the often-processional nature of recent Monaco races, attributed to the circuit’s tight layout and the increasing size of Formula 1 cars, which limit overtaking opportunities. The 2024 race, for example, saw the top ten finishers maintain their starting positions, with a first-lap red flag negating any strategic variation.

Under the current regulations, since 2010, drivers are required to use at least two different dry tyre compounds during a dry race, necessitating a single pit stop.

However, the new ruling specifically targets the Monaco Grand Prix.

An FIA statement released on Wednesday, February 26 outlined the change: “The WMSC reviewed a proposal regarding the implementation of a mandatory two-stop strategy (in both wet and dry conditions) for the Monaco GP, with the primary intent of improving the sporting spectacle of this race. Following recent discussions in the F1 Commission, a specific requirement for the Monaco GP has been approved mandating the use of at least three sets of tyres in the race, with a minimum of two different tyre compounds to be used if it’s a dry race.”

This alteration means drivers will now be compelled to make two pit stops, regardless of weather conditions, effectively forcing more strategic variation and potentially creating more on-track action.

Formula 1 and the Automobile Club de Monaco recently agreed to extend the Grand Prix’s contract until at least 2031. The new two-stop rule, initially discussed at an F1 Commission meeting in London, has now received official approval from the WMSC.

Charles Leclerc, who won his home race last year under the previous regulations, has voiced his support for the change.

Speaking to Sky Sports News in the previous week, Leclerc stated: “I think it will definitely help the Sunday, especially with strategy. The excitement on Sunday is maybe a bit less than what you will hope. The Saturday is incredible but the Sunday maybe needs a little bit of spice and hopefully this will give it.”
