In a prestigious ceremony held amidst the ancient grandeur of Rome, the 19th Plenary Assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) concluded last week with a notable announcement: His Serene Highness Prince Albert II and Italian President Sergio Mattarella have been named recipients of the 2025 PAM Award.
The news, first reported by the Sovereign Order of Malta’s international website, has sparked widespread praise for the Monaco royal’s longstanding commitment to humanitarian causes.
The announcement came during the assembly’s gathering from February 19–21, where delegates from 34 nations convened to address pressing regional challenges. This year’s PAM Awards, an accolade established in 2011 to recognize individuals and organizations advancing peace, cooperation, and social good across the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions, spotlighted HSH Prince Albert II for his role as a “Champion of Peace and Humanitarian Assistance.” The nomination, sources reveal, was put forward by Ambassador Alberto di Luca, the Order of Malta’s representative in Monaco, who hailed the prince’s leadership in turbulent times.
“HSH Prince Albert II’s recognition is particularly fitting given the world’s current climate of violent conflict,” Ambassador di Luca said in a statement. “The Principality of Monaco has consistently shown a deep sensitivity to international cooperation and a readiness to act where suffering is greatest. This award reflects his unwavering dedication to those values.”

The ceremony itself, attended by 300 delegates, underscored PAM’s mission to foster dialogue and collaboration across borders. Representing Monaco, a member state of the assembly, were Ambassador to Italy Anne Eastwood and Marie-Noëlle Gibelli, head of the National Council’s delegation to PAM. While the official awards presentation is yet to take place, the announcement in Rome has already drawn attention to the recipients’ contributions.
HSH Prince Albert II’s selection highlights Monaco’s outsized role on the global stage, despite its small size. Known for its proactive stance on environmental and humanitarian issues, the principality has earned a reputation as a beacon of compassion and diplomacy. Past PAM Award recipients have included political leaders, nonprofit organisations, and cultural figures united by their efforts to uphold the assembly’s core principles—values described as shared by “all people of goodwill.”
For HSH Prince Albert II, the honour adds to a legacy of service, blending tradition with a modern commitment to alleviating global suffering. As the world watches, this latest recognition reaffirms his place among the Mediterranean region’s most impactful leaders.
