Under the warm glow of red and gold, Monaco ushered in the Chinese New Year with a grand gala at the Fairmont Monte Carlo on 24 January. The event, organised by the Monaco-China Association with the support of Monaco’s Embassy in China, brought together dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and members of both the Monegasque and Chinese communities to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Wood Snake, a symbol of wisdom, creativity, and renewal.
The occasion carried special significance beyond the Lunar New Year. It also marked the 30th anniversary of official diplomatic relations between China and Monaco, a partnership that has flourished since Prince Rainier III first established ties in 1955. During the evening, Monaco’s Ambassador to China, Marie-Pascale Boisson, highlighted the deep and evolving connections between the two nations, spanning tourism, education, commerce, and environmental collaboration.
One of the most poignant moments of the night came as Ambassador Boisson spoke about the ecological initiatives championed by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation in China. Two flagship projects stand out: the creation of a protected area in northeast China for the endangered Amur tiger, the world’s largest feline, and a collaborative scientific study on pollution in Lake Taihu, which has since expanded to the Yangtze River, China’s longest and the third-longest in the world. These efforts, she noted, reflect a shared commitment to environmental stewardship across borders.
The festivities began with the traditional Dragon Dance, its swirling movements believed to chase away bad spirits and bring prosperity for the year ahead. The evening unfolded with a series of captivating performances showcasing China’s rich cultural heritage. Guests sampled fine Chinese liqueurs, admired live calligraphy demonstrations, and were transported through time by the melodies of ancient musical instruments. Traditional dancers, inspired by centuries-old choreography, added an air of grace and history to the celebration.
A carefully curated gala menu paid tribute to both Chinese and Monegasque culinary traditions, blending flavours from East and West in a harmonious fusion of gastronomy.
A highlight of the evening was the surprise participation of students from Collège Charles III, who are studying Mandarin. Accompanied by their teacher, they delighted the audience with their rendition of well-known Chinese songs, a heartfelt gesture that underscored the growing cultural ties between Monaco and China.
As the night came to a close, the atmosphere was one of unity, optimism, and shared appreciation. More than just a celebration, the event embodied the spirit of cultural exchange and diplomacy, setting the tone for a year of prosperity and promise ahead.
