The Stade Louis II, an iconic landmark in Monaco, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Inaugurated by Prince Rainier III on 25 January 1985, the stadium remains a key fixture in the Principality, instantly recognisable by its distinctive arches. Designed as a multi-purpose venue, it has hosted an array of sporting, cultural, and community events over the past four decades, cementing its role at the heart of Monegasque life.
To mark this milestone, a series of celebrations will take place, starting with an official ceremony on Tuesday, February 4 in the stadium’s Salon d’Honneur. The event will retrace the origins of the Stade Louis II, from its conception to its grand opening, and will bring together those who played a role in its construction and development. This gathering will serve as a reminder of the stadium’s deep-rooted significance in Monaco.
In April, an immersive exhibition titled Il était une première fois will be unveiled, paying tribute to the venue’s rich history. Showcasing key moments from the past 40 years, it will highlight the first major events held at the stadium, including its inaugural football match, first world record, archery competition, concert, and boxing gala. The exhibition will be staged in the recently renovated pedestrian walkway inside the stadium, ensuring public access for several months. Created with the expertise of scenographer Ahmad Reshad and journalist Gérard Holtz, it promises to transport visitors through time with archival materials, photographs, and memorabilia that capture the stadium’s lasting impact on sport and culture in Monaco.
For collectors and history enthusiasts, a commemorative stamp marking the 40th anniversary of the Stade Louis II will be released on Tuesday, March 18, offering a timeless keepsake of this historic celebration.
