As part of his participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, held from 20 to 24 January, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco presided over a major event in the fight against plastic pollution…

On 24 January, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation organised a high-level breakfast entitled ‘Bridging Perspectives: Advancing Solutions for Plastic Management’, in partnership with UnaTerra. This event brought together 30 international leaders from major companies for a constructive dialogue, setting out their commitment as part of a global collaborative approach. This initiative is part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to promote and accelerate the development of a sustainable blue economy, in the face of the major threats to the world’s oceans.

An environmental and health crisis

Among these threats, plastic pollution is at the top of the list. Its devastating impact on marine ecosystems and human health is now indisputable, yet global efforts are slow to provide solutions to the problem. International negotiations are struggling to reach a conclusion, leaving the field wide open for the private sector, civil society and innovators to take up this colossal challenge.

In his opening speech, Prince Albert II reiterated the urgent need for action, while stressing the key role of economic forces in this battle: “This threat is vital, but we are not powerless in the face of it. We are here to act, to mobilise the necessary resources and to rally goodwill. Because these resources and this will do exist’, he said.

A Wider Commitment to the Blue Economy

Alongside this breakfast, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation also took part in several events dedicated to the blue economy. In particular, Monaco House, organised on 23 January by Monaco’s Department of Attractiveness, highlighted the Monegasque government’s efforts to promote sustainable initiatives in the marine and coastal sectors.

An Inspiring Step for Change

The ‘Bridging Perspectives’ breakfast marked an inspiring step towards uniting the key players to respond to the plastics crisis. As HSH Prince Albert II said, the tools, the will and the opportunities exist to transform this threat into an opportunity for innovation and progress. Only by acting together can we ensure a sustainable future for the oceans and for generations to come.

With this renewed commitment at Davos, Monaco continues to lead the way in the fight against plastic pollution and the development of a blue economy.
