The second edition of the Pétanque Challenge, organised by Monaco Liver Disorder (MLD), concluded with resounding success as 10,000 euros were raised to support groundbreaking research into treatments for paediatric liver cancer. The event, held on Sunday, January 19, saw the team representing the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation emerge as champions.

The funds were presented to Dr. Christophe Grosset of the MIRCADE research team at the University of Bordeaux. These contributions will aid in the development of new therapies for young children battling liver cancer, particularly those facing chemotherapy-resistant relapses.

Carla Fadoul Shechter, Executive President and Founder of MLD, explained the dual purpose of the event: raising funds for medical research and offering families affected by rare diseases a reprieve from the heavy atmosphere of hospitals. “It’s about fostering hope and resilience among parents overwhelmed by circumstances beyond their control,” she said.

The initiative underscores MLD’s commitment to creating a supportive community for families, while also emphasising the importance of optimism and positivity in the journey toward recovery. Carla shared her personal experience, recounting her son Alexandre’s battle with an autoimmune disease. Now 18 and enjoying good health, Alexandre’s story serves as a testament to perseverance and hope.

The Pétanque Challenge was accompanied by a gourmet lunch prepared by seven renowned chefs, adding a festive touch to the event. This initiative is part of a broader effort by MLD to provide memorable experiences for young patients, including invitations to the Formula 1 Grand Prix terraces and participation in Monaco’s Girù de Natale race, facilitated by MLD’s long-standing partners, the Monaco Fire Brigade.

Raising awareness about organ donation remains another critical focus for MLD, as transplants often represent the only chance of survival for many young patients. “Being on a transplant waiting list is like being on death row,” Carla emphasised, urging greater understanding of the life-saving importance of organ donation.

The day’s winners were awarded trophies crafted by Monegasque artist Anthony Alberti, also known as Mr One Teas, further highlighting the spirit of unity and creativity that defined this year’s Pétanque Challenge.
