At his annual wishes to the press, held this Thursday at Monaco Town Hall, Mayor Georges Marsan spoke with unusual openness about the legal case in which he has been involved since 2024. Accused of influence peddling and corruption as part of an ongoing judicial investigation, he expressed his impatience with the delays in the investigation…
Georges Marsan, in office since 2003, is one of the most emblematic figures in Monegasque politics. The affair, which has raised questions throughout the Principality, has put the local authority in the spotlight. The mayor was keen to underline his desire for transparency, calling for a swift resolution, whatever the outcome.
‘I don’t agree with the delays, I think it’s completely abnormal,’ he added, insisting on the impact that this prolonged procedure could have on his mandate and the institution he represents.
In a Principality where political life is often discreet, this statement stands out for its directness. As he awaits the conclusions of the investigation, Georges Marsan seems determined to face the results head on.
“I don’t want to wait 15 years for an investigation”
Georges Marsan did not avoid the question. Taking the lead, he stated his wish to see the investigation completed quickly :
‘The investigation is still ongoing. It was supposed to finish in December, but it’s been postponed.’ he said.
According to his lawyers, the investigation could be completed at the beginning of 2025, but the wait seems to be weighing heavily on the elected representative.
‘We are not ‘just anybody’, we are an institution. If we are accused of something, let the judges say so. I don’t want to wait 15 years for an investigation.
These comments illustrate the mayor’s irritation with delays that he considers excessive and incompatible with the institutional responsibility of his position. The progress of this affair will be followed closely.
