A dramatic fire broke out on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 8 on the border between Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and Monaco, prompting swift action from emergency services and causing significant disruptions. The incident began around 15:15 when a flaming gas leak ignited a villa at 68 Avenue Jean-Jaurès. The fire quickly spread to the roof, impacting a neighbouring house at 70 Avenue Jean-Jaurès, Monaco-Matin reports.
Although no injuries were reported, the fire caused extensive structural damage. A wall collapse brought down portions of the roof, leading the City of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin to issue an immediate order prohibiting access and habitation in both houses. Affected residents, including a couple and their three-year-old child, were temporarily relocated to a reception facility set up at the CCAS Foyer-Restaurant.
Emergency services faced challenges containing the blaze, as efforts focused on halting the gas leak without extinguishing the flame, ensuring both structural protection and public safety. GRDF teams promptly cut off the gas supply, aiding firefighting efforts.
Monaco’s fire department deployed 22 firefighters and seven vehicles, while their French counterparts from the Menton barracks contributed around ten firefighters and two trucks. Despite these efforts, the fire was not fully under control until approximately 17:00, with road clearing operations extending into the evening.
The incident caused significant traffic disruption. A security perimeter was established, neutralising the area between the Quatre Chemins roundabout and Monaco’s entrance. Traffic was diverted via Avenue Notre-Dame Bon Voyage and Avenue Varavilla. By 18:00, the security perimeter remained active, and road access had yet to be restored as French firefighters continued clearing the affected area.
