With a dual approach of enforcement and prevention, the government is taking significant steps to address issues such as speeding and impaired driving.
From now until January 5, nightly police patrols are conducting road checks across Monaco. Speeding and alcohol-related offenses remain key targets, as these are the leading causes of recent accidents. In addition, the installation of speed cameras in all city tunnels and new transom radars aim to deter reckless driving.
Looking forward, a transformative road safety bill is set to be introduced in 2025. Currently, Monegasque law limits random checks to cases involving accidents or observable offenses. The proposed legislation will enable law enforcement to conduct unannounced checks at the discretion of judicial authorities, such as the Attorney General. This change aligns Monaco with international best practices and strengthens its ability to combat driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
The new law will also increase penalties for various offenses, including public drunkenness, parking violations, and exceeding legal blood alcohol limits. Alongside these measures, the government has launched a robust awareness campaign, utilizing platforms like Monaco Info to encourage safe driving practices.
