Minister of the Interior Lionel Beffre highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and festive environment while addressing road safety concerns during this high-risk period.
The number of police officers on duty will be tripled for the evening of December 31, ensuring a robust presence across Monaco’s busiest areas, including the Port of Monaco, the casino district, and key entry points. Minister Beffre emphasized the importance of preventing drunk driving, urging partygoers to utilize taxis or other transport solutions. “If they have been drinking, they cannot take their cars,” he stated, underscoring the government’s zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving.
To address the alarming rise in alcohol-related incidents, authorities have implemented 60 road checks since mid-December, resulting in 200 fines. Beffre also announced plans for a new legislative proposal to introduce stricter measures, including creating an offense for endangering others’ lives while driving under the influence, increasing fines for excessive speeds, and introducing controls to detect intoxication more effectively.
Beyond road safety, specific measures will be in place at popular New Year’s Eve venues, including crowd control and restrictions on alcohol and glass bottle access. Collaboration with local businesses, nightclubs, and taxi services has been enhanced to accommodate increased demand during the festivities.
