The Monegasque government is set to undertake a two-phase project to protect the Larvotto coastline from the increasing impact of storms, with work commencing in mid-January 2025…

While measures such as underwater dikes and geotubes filled with sand have been implemented to mitigate wave impact, these have proven insufficient to fully safeguard the beach and its surrounding businesses. To enhance protection, new developments will be carried out over two winters.

The first phase, scheduled to begin on January 13, 2025, involves replacing the geotubes on the eastern cove with a newly constructed island designed to better absorb wave energy. This phase is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025, weather permitting, and swimming will be prohibited during this period to ensure safety.

The second phase, addressing the western side of the beach, will follow during the winter of 2025-2026, completing the comprehensive reinforcement of the Larvotto coastline.

These upgrades, including additional cofferdams along the promenade near the shops, reflect Monaco’s commitment to preserving its cherished coastal environment while protecting businesses and visitors from the effects of nature’s unpredictability. With these measures, the Larvotto beach will be better equipped to withstand future storms and continue serving as a vital recreational and economic hub for the Principality.
