Monaco is taking strides to bolster its rail connectivity with the acquisition of two REGIO N2 trainsets, following the signing of a funding agreement between the Prince’s Government and SNCF Sud Azur on December 20…
These additional trainsets, each with a capacity of nearly 500 seats (approximately 1,000 passengers in total), aim to enhance commuter services along the Grasse-Cannes-Ventimiglia route, which includes Monaco.
The newly acquired trains are part of an ambitious plan to improve service during peak hours, offering four long trainsets in the morning and evening between Cannes and Monaco, and ensuring a 15-minute frequency throughout the day. With 124 TER services scheduled daily through Monaco, the initiative supports the growing demand at Monaco Monte-Carlo station, the region’s third busiest TER hub, which recorded 8 million travelers in 2023 and a 20% increase in traffic during the first half of 2024.
These trains, expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2027, will be maintained at the new Nice Saint-Roch facility, reducing downtime previously incurred by servicing in Marseille. This partnership reflects Monaco’s commitment to sustainable transport alternatives, as TER services remain a vital solution for reducing reliance on private vehicles and facilitating access to the Principality for workers and visitors.
Funded through a €40.4 million grant from Monaco and additional support from the Region for operational costs, this investment highlights Monaco’s dedication to enhancing regional mobility and reducing environmental impact.
