In an exclusive interview with Monaco-Matin ahead of Monaco’s National Day on Tuesday, November 19, HSH Prince Albert II highlighted his commitment to global environmental advocacy, stating his readiness to engage directly with US President-elect Donald Trump on climate issues. The Prince, who has championed environmental causes throughout his reign, suggested leading a coordinated initiative with scientists and experts to persuade Trump to reconsider his stance on environmental preservation.

“We must congratulate the president-elect on his success and express my wish and that of the Principality to continue the long history of cooperation and friendship that exists between our two countries,” the sovereign told Monaco-Matin.

However, Prince Albert did not shy away from expressing concern about Trump’s climate-skeptic views and the appointments within his administration that signal a potential rollback of environmental commitments.

In the interview, the Prince lamented the United States’ current trajectory under Trump’s anticipated leadership, saying, “The United States could be a global leader on these issues, but it is not exactly heading that way with the various nominations that have come out. In particular, the person expected to be in charge of the environment could reverse many of the United States’ commitments.”

Prince Albert reiterated his dedication to keeping environmental and climate issues at the forefront of international agendas, emphasising their critical importance.

The sovereign also revealed that he and a group of experts and scientists are considering a coordinated effort to engage Trump directly, particularly to prevent the U.S. from withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. “I will personally commit myself and will be very attentive to this mission. It will not be easy, but you have to know how to challenge yourself,” he stated.

The Prince’s proactive approach underscores his determination to ensure that the fight against climate change remains a global priority, even amidst political shifts in key nations, while his comments reflect Monaco’s longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and international cooperation.
