From Saturday, November 16, to Sunday, November 24, Monaco will join cities across Europe in observing the European Waste Reduction Week (SERD), now in its sixth year in the Principality. This year’s theme, “Food Waste,” is promoted under the slogan “Waste is out of taste,” encouraging residents to embrace eco-responsible habits and reduce waste through sustainable consumption practices.

The initiative, organised by Monaco’s Directorate of the Environment in partnership with the Directorate of Urban Development, the Monaco City Hall, and the Société Monégasque d’Assainissement, will feature a SERD Village set up on the Promenade Honoré II and within Casa d’I Soci on Wednesday and Thursday, November 20-21, from 9 am to 6 pm. Open to the public, the village will host around fifteen specially designed stands with interactive workshops and displays addressing waste reduction, food waste, circular economy practices, repair and recycling, and environmental awareness.

Responding to the strong community support for SERD in previous years, the Directorate of the Environment will hold a clothing drive specifically for undergarments, as well as a collection for eyeglasses. Collection bins for these donations will be set up at Fontvieille Shopping Center. Additionally, a unique initiative for 2024 invites all hair salons in the Principality to gather cut hair throughout SERD week. These hair donations will be sent to Coiffeurs Justes, a French organisation that repurposes hair clippings for eco-friendly uses, including pollutant absorption.

The full SERD program is accessible through the ‘Your Monaco’ mobile app and on the website of the Prince’s Government, where a detailed press kit is also available.
