In a thrilling late-game comeback, AS Monaco defeated RC Strasbourg 3-1 at Stade de la Meinau on Saturday, November 9, clinching a vital win after trailing until the final quarter-hour. Eliesse Ben Seghir’s two late goals proved decisive, propelling the Red and Whites to victory and allowing them to reclaim second place in Ligue 1 from Olympique de Marseille.
Despite facing an aggressive and determined Strasbourg team, the Monegasques remained resilient, building on recent momentum from their Champions League win over Bologna. With just one win in their last four league matches, coach Adi Hütter made strategic changes to his lineup, introducing Caio Henrique and Takumi Minamino in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Backed by nearly 500 traveling fans, Monaco started strong with an early header from Breel Embolo, but Strasbourg responded with several dangerous attempts of their own, eventually breaking through when Guéla Doué netted the opener from a tight angle in the 29th minute.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Monaco’s Hütter made two substitutions, bringing on Christian Mawissa and George Ilenikhena to shift the momentum. Although Strasbourg continued to test Monaco’s defence, a turning point arrived in the 79th minute when Ben Seghir converted a penalty after VAR confirmed a handball by Strasbourg’s Moreira, levelling the score at 1-1. Seizing on their newfound momentum, Monaco took the lead in the 89th minute with Ben Seghir’s second goal, skilfully set up by Maghnes Akliouche on a cross-field pass from Vanderson.
Monaco then sealed their victory in extra time when Ilenikhena capitalised on a fast break, securing the team’s seventh league win. With this victory, Monaco narrows the gap with league leaders Paris Saint-Germain to three points as they enter the international break.
