A 27-year-old Italian driver faced trial in Monaco on Tuesday for a road accident that occurred nearly ten months ago, leaving a motorcyclist with serious injuries and lingering pain.

The incident, described by the presiding judge as a “catapulting,” took place on January 30, 2024, on Boulevard d’Italie. The defendant, a home beautician, made an illegal left turn into Rue des Giroflées, crossing a solid white line and striking the victim who was traveling on a motorbike in the opposite direction. The crash left both vehicles destroyed, and the motorcyclist immobilized on the road.

Despite clear conditions that morning—no low light, poor visibility, or substance impairment—the defendant admitted the crash was due to a “mistake of inattention.” Following the accident, he sought medical advice and began using corrective glasses to improve his driving vision.

The motorcyclist, who endured three weeks of temporary incapacity, reported ongoing pain in his left shoulder. His lawyer, Christophe Sosso, has called for a legal examination to assess the full extent of his client’s recovery and any potential long-term damage.

Deputy Attorney General Morgan Raymond underscored the severity of the incident, emphasizing that it narrowly avoided a fatal outcome. The prosecution requested a five-day suspended sentence and fines totaling 2,150 euros. The court ultimately imposed a 2,000-euro fine and ordered the defendant to pay an additional 2,000 euros to the victim. A medical evaluation was also mandated to determine further compensation.
