A six-month suspended prison sentence and a two-year ban from Monaco were handed down to the man who assaulted Monegasque racing driver Arthur Leclerc in 2022 while he was driving his brother Charles Leclerc’s car. The incident occurred in June 2022, when Arthur and his friends were leaving a restaurant in Bordighera, Italy.
As they returned to their vehicle, a young Italian man from Ventimiglia, along with several companions, confronted the group, leading to a violent altercation. The attacker punched Arthur in the face through the open window of the car and, along with his group, damaged the vehicle, even shattering the windshield.
Despite numerous witness testimonies, the attacker remained unidentified until two years later when he was arrested in Monaco in April, 2024 while intoxicated in public. During questioning, the defendant admitted to the attack, claiming he acted out of fear after the car allegedly “brushed his foot.”
Arthur Leclerc, who received a five-day medical work stoppage due to the assault, and his brother Charles sought approximately 20,000 euros in damages for the injuries, vehicle repairs, and legal costs. The Monaco Criminal Court’s sentence exceeded the prosecutor’s request, emphasising the severity of the assault and its potential long-term effects on Arthur’s health and career.
