AS Monaco claimed a significant 2-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais at the Groupama Stadium on Saturday, August 24, ending a seven-year drought on Lyon’s home turf. This win on the second match day of this Ligue 1 season not only secured three valuable points but also propelled Monaco to the top of the table, tied with Paris Saint-Germain.

The match began with Monaco struggling to capitalise on their dominance, as they created numerous chances but failed to break the deadlock in the first half. Despite several early attempts from Denis Zakaria, Eliesse Ben Seghir, and Camara, and a solid defensive performance from Ismail Jakobs, the first half ended 0-0. Breel Embolo and Takumi Minamino came close to scoring, but Lyon’s goalkeeper, Lucas Perri, kept the score level.

After the break, the Monegasques continued to press, with Embolo and Ben Seghir both coming close to finding the net. The breakthrough finally came in the 65th minute when Maghnes Akliouche, following a strong run down the right, delivered a perfect pass to Ben Seghir, who calmly slotted the ball into the net, giving Monaco a well-deserved lead.

Monaco’s pressure didn’t let up, and in the 72nd minute, substitute Jordan Teze nearly made an immediate impact with a volley, narrowly missing the target. However, Monaco doubled their lead in the 82nd minute when Lamine Camara scored his first official goal for the club, assisted by Kassoum Ouattara after a well-placed ball from Jakobs. Akliouche almost added a third with a curling shot, but the 2-0 scoreline remained.

This victory was a testament to Monaco’s character and determination, as they ended a long streak of defeats in Lyon and solidified their position at the top of Ligue 1 alongside PSG.
