HSH Prince Albert was one of 20 heads of state to take part in commemorations of the Allied landings in Normandy 80 years ago. In addition to many European leaders, US President Joe Biden was present.
On Thursday, June 6, Prince Albert took part in a British ceremony to mark the occasion, and later attended the main event at Omaha Beach, where US troops landed on June 6, 1944. Given his American heritage through Princess Grace, this was a particularly poignant occasion for the Sovereign. He said it was important for him to be part of the event because of his family history and his connections with the United States.
The Prince remarked on the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying that the support for Ukraine is unanimous and most stay so. “It was a very beautiful symbol that he should be here today,” Prince Albert said.
