A 57 year-old suspected jewel thief, who was extradited from Spain on Tuesday morning, appeared briefly before a Monaco court just hours later, at which point the trial was deferred until a later date.
His appointed lawyer had not had time to become acquainted with the case, the court heard, and needed a few more days, local French-language daily Monaco Matin reported.
The lawyer for the injured parties, a couple who suffered a loss of 330,000 in June, 2019, raised no objection to a delay, but called for it to be as brief as possible.
An International arrest warrant was issued for the alleged thief in January, 2020. He has served prison sentences in Austria, Italy and Spain.
“I never had the intention of escaping justice,” the Peruvian detainee said, as he was led away in handcuffs for an initial four-day stay on the Rock.
