Following the dramatic arrest of Mayor Georges Marsan almost two weeks ago, Minister of State Pierre Dartout has told Monaco Matin that a law of 2006 guarantees the independence of the Town Hall, adding that he has had no contact with the Mayor since his arrest and subsequent release on bail.
Mayor Marsan has been charged with a string of offences, including corruption and association with criminals. Minister Dartout said that in the meantime the presumption of innocence must be upheld.
The Minister added that he had sought guidance from the Secretary of State for Justice, Sylvie Petit-Leclair, on the question of how the Town Hall will be able to function in the present circumstances.
The first deputy Mayor, Camille Svara, has assumed the Mayor’s responsibilities until January 2.
