Despite Monaco’s small size, athletes of the Principality succeeded in ranking fourth in the Games of the Small States of Europe, which have just finished in Malta.

Three much bigger countries won more medals, with Malta, the host state, coming top of the list ahead of Cyprus and Luxembourg, with 97 medals.

Monaco’s 33 medals placed the Principality lead of Iceland, San Marino, Montenegro, Andorra and Liechtenstein.

Yvette Lambin-Berti, Secretary General of the Monegasque Olympic Committee, said the Games were a big success for Monaco. She credited a strong team spirit that augurs well for sportsmen and women in the future.
