Lewis Hamilton continues to grab headlines, as the formidable Formula 1 driver has announced that he will be honouring his mother by changing his surname.

The Brit says that he will incorporate his mother Carmen’s surname, Larbalestier, alongside the well known Hamilton name.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming F1 season opening Bahrain Grand Prix, Hamilton said: “I am really proud of my family’s name. My mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.”

“I don’t really fully understand the whole idea that when people get married the woman loses her name and I really want my mum’s name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”

Having then been asked when he expects to make the name change, Hamilton said: “Hopefully soon. We are working on it.”

Hamilton’s father, Anthony, and his mother Carmen separated when Hamilton was just two years-old. Now 37, Hamilton continues to enjoy a great relationship with both parents, who can regularly be seen supporting him on a race weekend.

It is currently unclear whether Hamilton will hyphenate the two surnames, and if so, in which order they would be placed.

Meanwhile, excitement is growing in F1 and its fanbase, as the 2022 season is set to begin very shortly with the Bahrain GP on Sunday, March 20.

If his own words are anything to go by, Hamilton has a mountain to climb ahead of him, as the seven-time world champion will have to overcome Mercedes’ technical woes in order to bring the fight to defending world champion Max Verstappen right from the first ‘lights out and away we go’.
