A Monegasque who had worked as a bartender suffered a lot of stress during the dark days of total lockdown, Monaco Criminal Court was told last week, as reported by local French-language daily Monaco Matin.

However, it was his abuse of alcohol during this period that led him to treat his companion of ten years with considerable brutality. He used intimidation and violence to force his partner to sleep on the sofa, the court heard.

The victim told the court that when her partner was sober he was adorable, but when he drinks “it’s hell.” For his part, he said it was “all lies.”

The prosecution called for a 15-day prison term, while his own counsel proposed that he pay 5,000 euros in fine and costs. In the end the court decided on a two-month suspended sentence and a payment of 1,000 euros to the victim.
