A former resident of Monaco, now living in Rome and not present at the hearing, was last week accused of non-payment of child support to his former wife, living with her nine year-old daughter in Denmark.

The prosecution alleged that the defendant deliberately emptied his Monaco bank account to avoid making payments, while counsel representing the ex-husband claimed that his former wife had stopped him seeing his child at every turn, local French daily Monaco Matin reported.

Me Érika Bernardi, representing the husband, said: “We hear a lot about violence against women. What about men?” She called the accusations a mistreatment of her client, who at the age of 64 is now retired and unable to make the payments demanded.

The ex-husband was handed a three-month jail sentence while the payment to his former partner was set at 4,000 euros, not the 50,000 demanded.
