In the UK on Monday, July 26, 24,950 new cases were reported, down from 29,173 new cases on Sunday, July 25, and down from 39,375 new cases seven days ago.
The fall in the number of new cases has taken many experts by surprise, and has come as happy news to an otherwise embattled government.
The proportion of the UK population having received a first dose of vaccine now stands at 88 percent, while 70.3 percent have had both doses, as of the end of July 24.
The latest figures in France show 15,242 new cases and six new deaths on Sunday, July 25. However, the weekend figures in France are notoriously inaccurate as reporting lags behind over the weekend.
Both the UK and France are now pursuing herd immunity, although the phrase hasn’t been used in public in either country.
