The Monaco Red Cross is inviting donations to help the victims of the devastating hurricane that hit the Bahamas last week.

Hurricane Dorian claimed at least 20 lives, with hundreds of people still unaccounted for. Whole neighbourhoods have been destroyed by the weather system that hovered over the islands for several days.

Following the declaration of a state of emergency by the Bahamas government, local red cross teams were deployed immediately. But the challenges are immense, with the main hospital on Grand Bahama no longer operational, and thousands of people in need of food and water.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched a project to help 5,000 families, providing shelter, hygiene and sanitation kits, kitchen kits, blankets, emergency health, first aid and and psychological support to victims.

Those who wish to help can do so by sending cheques to the Monegasque Red Cross, marked “Hurricane Dorian,” or by credit or debit card on the website www.croix-rouge.mc, by selecting “Hurricane Dorian” in the drop-down menu. All donations will be used for this relief project, the Monaco Red Cross said. Address: 27 boulevard de Suisse, MC 98000 Monaco. e-mail : redcross@croix-rouge.mc
