A Romanian woman has been sent to jail for attempting to steal a mobile phone from a distracted customer in a Condamine cafe.
The 32 year-old culprit has 11 convictions in France for theft and shoplifting, the Monaco Criminal Court was told. On finding her telephone missing from the table, the victim of the crime, committed at the end of June this year, quickly alerted the police, who apprehended the suspect near to the scene.
The accused denied she had come to Monaco to steal, saying she had come to beg. However, she added, she had had too much to drink. In mitigation, her defending lawyer said she had committed no offence since 2013. The prosecutor asked for a six-month prison sentence, but this was reduced to four by the Court.
