Several highlights punctuated the day of celebration on March 8, at the initiative of the Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Women’s Rights.

At the invitation of Minister of State Pierre Dartout, a lunch was held in his Residence, chaired by HSH Princess Charlene with the theme ‘women and sport.’

Mr Dartout said that in the Principality the defence of women’s rights has been at the heart of the priorities of the Prince’s Government for many years. He also paid tribute to women around the world who are fighting for their rights and to make their voices heard, sometimes at the cost of their lives, referring in particular to the situation in Afghanistan and Iran.

Finally, he expressed his conviction that involving young people was essential to building a more egalitarian society and that the theme chosen this year for March 8 by the Committee for promotion and protection of women’s rights demonstrated the Principality’s commitment to the humanistic and universal values conveyed by sport.

At the end of the day, the collective artistic work of Mr One Teas, produced with 100 children from CE1 classes in the Principality, was officially presented to the public. This unveiling was made by TSH Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene who contributed personally to the work, as did Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella. This ceremony took place at the Espace Saint Antoine in the presence of children who took part in its creation.

On the theme “Women and sport seen through the prism of the new generation”, the work represents the face of Alice Millat, a great promoter of women’s sport, who participated in the first Women’s Olympics held in 1921 in Monaco. This avant-garde event was the result of the determination of Prince Albert I, associated with Camille Blanc, President of the Société des Bains de Mer.

The painting is also a way to remember that Monaco, land of sport, is a country precursor in the field of women’s sport.
