It came as no surprise on Wednesday morning when the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, announced that masks will be needed again on public transport from next Monday, July 11.

Estrosi is also President of the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur region. This includes Cap d’Ail but none of the other communities that border Monaco.

On Tuesday, July 5, the last day for which figures are available, the number of new coronavirus cases rose sharply to 206,554, with 75 deaths, the highest daily number in many weeks.

In the Alpes-Maritimes, which has a higher incidence rate than the average in France, 70 patients were in intensive care on Tuesday and the number of new cases was 1,350.

Last week Estrosi indicated his support for the re-introduction of the Health Pass at France’s borders.

This makes no epidemiological sense, as France has one of the highest rates of coronavirus infection in Europe.
