Monaco’s Charles Leclerc put in an astonishing performance in the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, starting in 19th place at the back of the grid, due to a grid penalty over numerous engine upgrades, and clawing his way up to finish in fifth place.
After a heroic drive from the back of the grid well into point taking places, the Monegasque was the fan-voted ‘Driver of the Day’
With teammate Carlos Sainz taking second place, Ferrari can be much happier than in recent races, but Mercedes took third and fourth at the hands of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
But it was the flying Dutchman who won again, Verstappen consolidating his lead in the drivers’ standings for Red Bull. Sergio Perez was forced to retire but keeps his second place, with Leclerc in third. Verstappen now stands on 175 points, Perez on 129 and Leclerc on 126. Hamilton is in sixth place on 77.
After a spectacular return to Circuit Genes Villeneuve, the Formula 1 circus sets its sights on the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with the race day falling on Sunday, July 3.
