UPDATED Sunday, November 28, 12:23: Anyone travelling to the UK will need to undergo a PCR test within two days of arrival and will be required to self-isolate until they have a negative test result. It is believed the new rules will come into effect on Tuesday, November 30, after being announced at a press conference in London on Saturday.

The move came after air passengers from South Africa, where the new Omicron variant was first detected, were free to pass through immigration with no extra checks. Two cases of the mutant variant, which is causing some concern due to its higher transmission rate and ability to by-pass vaccine immunity, were reported in the UK on Saturday.

Masks will become compulsory in shops and on public transport, the UK prime minister said.
