For the eighth match day of Ligue 1, the AS Monaco team travelled to the Gabriel Montpied stadium to face off against newly promoted side Clermont Foot on Sunday, September 26.

On the occasion of the two team’s first encounter in Ligue 1 this season, Niko Kovac opted to play the dangerous duo of Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland upfront with Aleksandr Golovin and Gelson Martins providing support from either side.

Despite their strong starting line-up, Monaco were the first to concede through Clermont’s Mohamed Bayo, whose goal put the hosts up by 1-0 in the seventh minute.

Not at all deterred by this early concession, the Monegasques pressed on, and before long their offensive pressure paid off. Served into the area by Ciao Henrique at the 25th minute, team captain Ben Yedder dribbled past the opposing goal before scoring the equaliser in an open goal.

The red and whites kept that pressure up going into the second half, and wasted little time in finding their second goal of the night. Henrique provided the assist for the second time, but it would be Volland who put Monaco in the lead at the 48th minute.

The greatest chance for the hosts to equalise arrived at the 68th minute through a strike by Jodel Dossou, but Alexander Nübel confidently saved the shot.

As the minutes ticked by the match seemed to be going well in the visitors’ favour, but star substitute Sofiane Diop sealed the deal for Monaco with a tidy goal one minute into overtime.

In the end, Monaco came out on top with a solid 1-3 victory over Clermont, making this their fourth match without defeat. This clean run has seen Monaco climb up the Ligue 1 table to eighth place, just a couple of points away from the podium places.

Monaco’s next Ligue 1 match up will be against Bordeaux on Sunday, October 3, but first they will head to Spain for a Europa league match against Real Sociedad on Thursday, September 30.
