Monaco has been outraged by a commentary on a Lyon fans’ website that insulted the memory of Princess Grace. The post was published following Lyon’s narrow win against Monaco’s football team at Stade Louis II on Sunday, following a game that took many twists and turns.
The theme of the commentary was that Monaco is a super-rich club while Lyon is a modest team from the provinces, even though a Chinese investment fund owns almost 20 percent of Lyon.
A literal translation of the offensive comment is “OL did not miss its turning point in Monaco.”
The Prince’s Palace reacted with indignation at the inappropriate comments. Prince Albert II condemned the remarks and its author by saying that respect should be due to the memory of any dead person.
The National Council issued its own statement saying that it was scandalous and inadmissible to compare a human tragedy that affected The Prince’s Family and our Country to a football match.
Monaco Supporters’ Club and the national football team added their own harsh criticisms. AS Monaco said: “AS Monaco “joins in the indignation of the Princely Family, following an article published online… The club denounces the inappropriate comments made by its author, which are disrespectful and offensive to the Princely Family, to Monegasques and to all supporters of AS Monaco, and wishes to show its solidarity.”
The Palace is reported to be considering legal action.
