As the end of the season draws near, AS Monaco travelled to Lyon to face off against longstanding Ligue 1 rivals Olympique Lyonnais at the Groupama Stadium on the evening of Friday, May 19. The fixture was hard fought but ultimately did not end in victory for the visiting Monegasques.

Team captain Wissam Ben Yedder drew first blood very early on with a successfully converted penalty at only the second minute of the match. However, Monaco found themselves level with Lyon again, as Alexandre Lacazette was on hand to tap the ball into the back of the net, finding the equaliser at the 38th minute.

The situation further disintegrated at the dawn of the second half, as Maxence Caqueret also found himself well-positioned to drive home the ball after Alexander Nübel deflected it, having been left alone by his defensive line.

Lyon’s Rayan Cherki hit the final nail in the visitors’ coffin with a goal of his own from a very tight angle, pinging the ball off the far post having evaded Caio Henrique first to make it 3-1 at the 78th minute.

No further goals were scored before the final whistle was blown, marking a loss for Monaco with just two matches left to go in the 2022/23 season. Leaving Lyon with no points, the Monegasques continue to occupy fourth place in the Ligue 1 table.

The next match will see Monaco take on Rennes, away on Saturday, May 27.
