Three women were killed by their partners or former partners on the first day of 2022.

The first killing of the day was in Maine-et-Loire at five in the morning, when a 27 year-old was stabbed repeatedly by her former boyfriend, 22, who was already subject to three separate court proceedings for violence against the victim.

The second was a 56 year-old woman in Meurthe-et-Moselle, who was found with a knife in her chest. The suspect is her partner, also in his fifties.

The third victim of the day (45) was found in a car boot in Nice. The car belongs to the victim’s eldest child, 24, an employee working in Monaco, who found the body, was arrested then released. Her ex-husband (60) has since been arrested and has admitted strangling her.

Unsurprisingly, women’s rights groups are enraged by the killings and have called on President Macron to take more decisive action. The feminist collective Nous Toutes claims that 200,000 French women are victims of conjugal violence every year in France.
