The Museum of Old Monaco is enjoying a successful return after reopening two months ago following several years of closure and an extensive renovation…

Located in the heart of Monaco-Ville, the museum has already welcomed 1,767 visitors from 40 countries, reflecting renewed interest in the Principality’s history, traditions and cultural identity. Spread across two floors, its collections explore the people, streets and customs that have shaped life on the Rock through paintings, engravings, maps and historic objects.

Particular emphasis is placed on the Monegasque language, with displays celebrating the writers who helped preserve and develop it. Among them is Louis Notari, a central figure in Monegasque literature whose A Legenda de Santa Devota will mark its centenary next year.

The language has also proved one of the museum’s biggest surprises for international visitors, many of whom arrive unaware that Monegasque exists and leave having learnt a few words.

For local residents, the museum provides an opportunity to reconnect with their heritage; for visitors, it offers an accessible introduction to a side of Monaco that can easily be overlooked. Its strong early attendance suggests that the stories of old Monaco have found a distinctly new audience.
