The 21st edition of the Palermo–Monte Carlo has begun, with Black Jack 100 amongst 45 yachts setting out from Sicily for the demanding Mediterranean race to the Principality…
One of the region’s leading offshore regattas, the race also counts towards several major international circuits, including the Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge and the Italian Offshore Championship.
After two previous victories, Monaco skipper Tristan Le Brun is taking nothing for granted aboard the 30.5-metre Black Jack 100. The Maxi, carrying an 18-strong crew, faces highly changeable winds during the first half of the race, making tactical decisions potentially as important as outright boat speed.
Unlike last year, when Black Jack took the longer route east of Corsica before setting a new race record, conditions currently favour the more conventional western passage towards the Strait of Bonifacio. Le Brun believes breaking the record may therefore be less likely this year, with the priority instead on managing the boat, avoiding unnecessary risks and remaining well positioned to attack as conditions evolve.
Preparation extends beyond tactics. Crew members must manage sleep, hydration and equipment carefully throughout the race, particularly during the opening hours.
Black Jack is also carrying 20-year-old Julio, a young sailor from Yacht Club de Monaco’s sports section. With only a handful of 100-foot racing yachts of this calibre operating worldwide, the opportunity offers him a rare introduction to offshore sailing at its highest level and a chance for an experienced crew to help nurture Monaco’s next generation.
