A coalition of 10 environmental organisations and an acoustics research centre has called for the cancellation of this weekend’s Monaco round of the E1 Series, arguing that the all-electric powerboat championship poses unacceptable risks to marine life in the Pelagos Sanctuary…

According to Monaco-Matin, the groups wrote to His Serene Highness Prince Albert II and event sponsor Hublot earlier this month, claiming the race is incompatible with the Principality’s long-standing commitment to protecting marine biodiversity. They argue that the racecourse lies within a protected area used by whales and dolphins, raising concerns about potential collisions with cetaceans, underwater noise, disturbance to wildlife and the environmental consequences of any battery-related incident.

If the event proceeds, the organisations are calling for specialist marine mammal observers to monitor the race and for comprehensive underwater noise measurements to be carried out before and during competition.

The E1 Series declined to comment officially to Monaco-Matin but said its operations have been specifically designed to minimise environmental impact. Organisers point to the RaceBird electric boats’ reduced noise levels, the use of hydrofoil technology, floating race markers and inflatable pontoons that avoid seabed anchoring.

They also highlighted safety protocols requiring racing to be suspended immediately if protected marine species are detected within the designated safety zone.
