Monaco experienced contrasting emotions at French Open on Wednesday as Valentin Vacherot was forced to withdraw from the tournament, while Hugo Nys kept the Principality’s hopes alive in the doubles draw with a dramatic comeback victory…

After successfully progressing through the opening round in singles, Vacherot announced his withdrawal from both the singles and doubles competitions due to a foot injury that has reportedly troubled him for several weeks. The Monegasque player had been scheduled to face Alejandro Tabilo on Thursday for a place in the third round, making the decision an especially disappointing one after his strong start in Paris.

However, Monaco still has a representative remaining at Roland-Garros thanks to doubles specialist Hugo Nys. Partnering French veteran Édouard Roger-Vasselin, Nys battled back from the brink to secure a hard-fought victory after trailing heavily during the match.

Speaking afterwards, Nys admitted the pair had been in serious difficulty before turning the contest around. He also reacted emotionally to Vacherot’s withdrawal, revealing he had spoken with his compatriot shortly before the match.

Now the last Monegasque player remaining in the tournament, Nys said he would do everything possible to represent the Principality “to the very end,” as Monaco’s attention turns fully towards its doubles campaign in Paris.
