Monaco is on the brink of a symbolic milestone. The Monegasque national community is approaching the 10,000 mark, a historic threshold for the Principality and one that reflects the steady evolution of its population.

According to the latest figures from Institut Monégasque de la Statistique et des Études Économiques, the number of Monegasque nationals now stands just below that figure. Reaching five digits would represent an important moment for a country where the national community has traditionally remained small, even as Monaco itself has become one of the most international places in the world.

What makes this growth particularly striking is that it is not driven by a surge in births. The Monegasque population actually faces a negative natural balance in some years, with more deaths than births recorded. In such a small population, even modest fluctuations can have a visible effect on the overall numbers.

Instead, the increase largely comes from the different pathways through which people can acquire Monegasque nationality. Each year, new citizens join the national community through descent, marriage, or naturalisation granted by the Sovereign. These additions gradually expand the number of nationals even when birth rates remain relatively modest.

The milestone is all the more remarkable when placed in the broader demographic context of Monaco. The Principality’s total population stands at around 38,000 residents according to IMSEE statistics, meaning Monegasque nationals represent roughly a quarter of those living within Monaco’s two square kilometres. The country is home to more than 140 nationalities, making it one of the most international societies on the planet.

Against that backdrop, the approaching 10,000 mark carries a strong symbolic weight. It reflects not only demographic evolution but also the quiet, steady growth of the national community at the heart of the Principality. In a place known for its global outlook and constant transformation, the number of Monegasque citizens continues to rise, slowly but surely, toward a historic new chapter.
