Table tennis is enjoying a fresh surge in popularity in Monaco, fuelled not only by strong sporting results but also by a cultural boost from the big screen…
The release of Marty Supreme, the new film telling the story of American table tennis legend Marty Reisman and starring Timothée Chalamet, has helped shine an unexpected spotlight on the sport, attracting new interest among younger audiences.
At AS Monaco Table Tennis, that renewed visibility is already being felt. Club officials report a noticeable rise in registrations, with licence numbers increasing by around 20 percent in recent years. The Olympic Games in Paris helped elevate the sport’s profile, but the cinematic portrayal of table tennis as a fast, technical and highly competitive discipline has further reinforced its appeal.
Far removed from the casual ping-pong tables of school playgrounds, table tennis in Monaco is a dynamic, high-intensity sport requiring constant physical and mental engagement. The section continues to grow steadily, expanding from just a handful of teams a few years ago to a broad structure competing at departmental, regional and national levels. Teams in National 2 and National 3 have maintained strong performances, reflecting the club’s ambition to progress further.
The presence of leading players on the international circuit has also strengthened the Principality’s reputation, whilst the club now welcomes around 140 members across all age groups and abilities. From beginners discovering the sport for the first time to seasoned competitors, the momentum shows no sign of slowing.
With Hollywood adding a touch of glamour and Monaco delivering results on the table, table tennis is enjoying one of its most visible and exciting moments yet.
