Pediatric cancers are taking centre stage at the 17th Monaco Biennial of Oncology, which opened this week at the Grimaldi Forum and runs until Friday, bringing together more than 1,500 healthcare professionals from around the world…

Oncologists, researchers and clinicians are exchanging on the latest advances in cancer research and treatment, with a particular focus this year on childhood and rare cancers.

For Monaco, the event is closely followed by the Flavien Foundation, the Principality’s leading association dedicated to the fight against paediatric cancers and rare diseases. Founded in 2014, the Foundation has been actively involved in the Biennial for nearly a decade, steadily increasing its presence and contribution to the scientific programme. Since 2022, an entire session has been dedicated to paediatric oncology and haematology, reflecting growing awareness of the specific challenges faced by young patients.

Working in close partnership with the Monaco Scientific Centre, the Foundation has helped support major research efforts, including the development of innovative therapeutic approaches based on drug repositioning. One of the key outcomes of this collaboration is a clinical trial currently underway, focusing on treatments adapted to childhood cancers, which will be presented during a dedicated session later this week.

Beyond research, the Biennial also highlights the importance of patient and family support. Alongside medical advances, attention is given to quality of life, psychological assistance and long-term care, particularly for children and young adults who often require extended follow-up and specialised services.

Although paediatric cancers are often described as rare, they affect thousands of young people each year, making research funding and public awareness crucial. For Monaco, the Biennial represents both a scientific milestone and a platform to reaffirm the Principality’s long-term commitment to paediatric oncology, combining medical innovation, institutional support and the mobilisation of local associations in the fight against childhood cancer.
