Young taste buds took centre stage this week as Monaco hosted the 28th edition of its annual Taste and Flavour Day, an initiative designed to introduce children to new ingredients and encourage curiosity around food…
This year’s spotlight was placed on coconut and sweet potato, two versatile products explored through a wide range of sweet and savoury recipes by first and second grade pupils from across the Principality.
The morning began at the Belle Époque room of the Hôtel Hermitage, where pupils gathered for a shared breakfast organised under the aegis of the Monaco Taste and Flavour Association. On the menu were sweet potato financiers and mini coconut cupcakes, giving children an immediate opportunity to discover unfamiliar flavours in a playful and accessible way.
Later in the day, 17 chefs visited CE2 classrooms in different schools, to continue the experience through tastings and discussions. The children sampled coconut water, coconut and sweet potato soup, sweet potato crisps and a muffin combining both ingredients, learning how the same products can be used in very different culinary styles.
Beyond the enjoyment of tasting, the initiative aims to build long-term awareness of healthy eating, diversity of flavours and encouraging cooking creatively from an early age. Judging by the enthusiasm and reactions from pupils, the programme once again succeeded in sparking curiosity, confidence and a genuine appetite for discovery, reinforcing Monaco’s commitment to food education and wellbeing.
