On Wednesday, December 17, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II attended the official presentation of the 2026 Vuelta a España route, confirming Monaco’s role as host of the prestigious race’s Grand Départ next summer…

The event marked a significant milestone for the Principality, reinforcing its long-standing connection to elite international cycling and its capacity to stage world-class sporting events.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Sovereign highlighted Monaco’s deep-rooted cycling heritage, recalling previous landmark moments including the start of the Giro d’Italia in 1966 and the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2009. The arrival of La Vuelta in August 2026 will add a new chapter to this history, underlining the Principality’s continued commitment to high-profile sporting competitions that resonate far beyond its borders.

The presentation was held at the Monte-Carlo Sporting Club and brought together institutional representatives, organisers and members of the cycling community. Commentary was provided by Frédéric Hélion, who outlined the significance of the route and the logistical and symbolic importance of Monaco opening one of cycling’s three Grand Tours.

The 2026 Vuelta a España will begin on August 22 with a 9.6-kilometre individual time trial through the streets of Monaco, offering a spectacular showcase of the Principality’s urban landscape and coastal setting. Broadcast to a global audience, the opening stage is expected to highlight Monaco’s unique blend of sport, heritage and international visibility.
