The Principality yesterday marked the launch of Pink October, the annual awareness campaign dedicated to the prevention and early detection of breast cancer…
Once again, the Princely Government has joined this global initiative, underlining the critical importance of regular screening. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. One in eight women will face the disease during their lifetime. Yet, early detection dramatically improves outcomes: according to the French National Cancer Institute (INCa), 60 percent of breast cancers are now diagnosed at an early stage, and 87 percent of patients are alive five years after diagnosis. This is due not only to advances in therapies but also to the widespread adoption of screening programs.
Screening relies mainly on mammography, capable of detecting lesions just a few millimetres in size, long before they can be felt. Ultrasound provides a valuable complement, while MRI is recommended in specific cases. In Monaco, women can access state-of-the-art equipment and expertise both at the Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG) and in private imaging practices, ensuring a level of care equal to leading international centres.
The campaign highlights that early detection saves lives and often allows for less aggressive treatment. As Pink October unfolds, the message is clear: prevention is the best defence. Women are strongly encouraged not to wait, but to make screening a priority.
