Monaco is participating in the 42nd triennial Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO*), currently taking place in Montréal, Canada, from Tuesday, September 23 to Friday, October 3.
The Principality’s delegation is led by Jean-Philippe Bertani, Monaco’s Permanent Representative to ICAO, joined by Jérôme Journet, Director of Civil Aviation. Over two weeks of high-level discussions, member states are addressing pressing global aviation issues, from improving safety and security to tackling cybercrime, boosting accessibility for passengers with disabilities, and advancing the climate resilience of the aviation sector.
A central theme of this year’s Assembly is sustainable aviation. Delegates are exploring ways to accelerate the industry’s transition towards decarbonisation, particularly through the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Elections for ICAO’s 36-member Council, the body responsible for implementing policies and standards, are also on the agenda.
Monaco, which has pledged carbon neutrality by 2050, is highlighting its commitment to innovation in regional and urban air mobility. The Principality is investing in the future of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs), with certification expected before the end of the decade, alongside the deployment of SAF.
The Assembly is taking place against a backdrop of geopolitical instability, with regional conflicts continuing to affect global air safety and passenger security. In addition to plenary sessions, the Monegasque delegation is engaging in bilateral talks, including with Singapore, to share experiences and best practices.
*Founded in 1944 and headquartered in Montréal, ICAO is a United Nations agency that sets global aviation standards. It currently counts 193 member states.
