The Government has moved to reassure the public and traders about the future of the Fontvieille Shopping Centre, unveiling a multi-stage plan to address its ageing infrastructure and modernise the site ahead of a larger redevelopment…

In a public meeting held at the Grimaldi Forum, Finance and Economy Minister Pierre-André Chiappori confirmed that immediate upgrades will be carried out to improve aesthetics, safety, and functionality while longer-term negotiations continue. These include both behind-the-scenes technical works and more visible improvements such as upgraded lighting, refurbished restrooms, improved signage, and better street furniture.

In total, €2 million in additional funds have been earmarked for 2026 to make tangible changes, with the government keen to avoid waiting for the full-scale reconstruction. The Domain Administration confirmed that annual maintenance budgets already support key systems such as sprinkler networks and fibre connectivity, but the new funds will allow for more noticeable upgrades to improve user experience. A dedicated architect has been appointed to lead the aesthetic renewal, with an emphasis on natural light and contemporary design.

Two specific infrastructure projects are also underway: the external escalators are already being replaced, with delivery of new equipment expected by April 2026, and the travellators serving the car park levels are also scheduled for replacement early next year. Traders left the meeting encouraged, with a member of the centre’s economic interest group noting the government’s plans aligned closely with proposals they have supported for over a decade.
