Monaco has renewed its strong commitment to international solidarity and sustainable development at the 4th United Nations Conference on Financing for Development, which opened on June 30 in Seville with an address by His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain.
In his opening remarks, King Felipe called for a bold rethinking of how development is financed, urging the global community to embrace cooperation and multilateralism as the cornerstones of progress. Against a backdrop of stagnating global aid and rising debt burdens, the conference adopted the “Seville Commitment” (“Compromiso de Sevilla”), an ambitious framework aimed at transforming development financing into a powerful engine for justice, solidarity, and meaningful impact.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the urgent need to mobilize both public and private capital to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), describing the current global debt system as “unsustainable.”
“This is not just about money,” Guterres said. “It’s about investing in the future we want to build—together.”
Representing the Principality of Monaco, the Monegasque delegation highlighted its ongoing efforts to support the world’s Least Developed Countries (LDCs), particularly in the areas of healthcare, food security, education, and job creation. Monaco’s message stressed the importance of innovative partnerships and financing mechanisms in building a fairer, more resilient global future.
At the forefront of Monaco’s delegation were H.E. Ms. Catherine Fautrier, Ambassador to Spain, and H.E. Ms. Isabelle Picco, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations. They were joined by Ms. Emilie Silvestre from the Directorate of International Cooperation and Mr. Benjamin Valli, Advisor to Monaco’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
